Big Game

Obviously, Austria doesn't come to mind if you talk about Game Fishing, however there is a quite skilled group of people who loves fishing for the big ones, and endeavours every year to different locations around the globe to catch that dream fish.

Frequent locations include Kenya, Mauritius, and the Grand Canary Islands, however some trips in the past have widened the choices with excellent catches in the Kap Verdes about 600 nautical miles west of Senegal in the Atlantic, where Robert Skala caught the fish of his life in 2003 - a Blue Marlin with 1034 lbs.

Also, this little group can look back to quite a number of successes in international competitions, and just this year in May the Austrian Team 1 has won the World Championships in Big Game in Sodwana Bay, South Africa.

13th World Championships Big Game, South Africa, Sodwana Bay

32 Teams of 15 Nationes took part in this Competition, and after a few years of absence a couple of Austrian Teams made the trip down to South Africa.

Cape Verdes, May 2004

A group of 6 fisho's took of for a week and went down to the Kap Verdes again this year. In 6 Fishing days they managed to tag and release a total of 13 Marlin, most of which weighed in excess of 500lbs. There was also a fight of one and a half hours on with a fish that was estimated to be another grander, but he managed to pull the hook before coming too close to the boat.

Malindi, Kenya, Jan. 2004

A fixpoint on the calendar of some of our members, third week of January seems to be the month for Sails and Wahoos just off Malindi on the north coast of Kenya.

A great amount of fish could be taken, including Yellowfin Tunas, nice dolphin fish, and a couple of Karambesis, the local name for Giant Trevally.

Cape Verdes, May 2003

The first documented Blue Marlin over 1000 lbs for a member of our club has been caught by Robert Skala. Congratulations for this wonderful fish. Check out the full story in the reports / photo section.
